Top 10 hikes in Loire Atlantique

On the coast, in the Breton countryside, between the salt marshes or along the Loire River, the hikes to do in Loire-Atlantique are numerous and varied. Discover some suggestions of itineraries of different lengths, for family walks as well as for experienced walkers.

Loop of the Saint-Gildas point in Préfailles

Starting from the Grande Plage, this 7 km loop consists of go along the seaside by the coastal path to the semaphore of the point Saint-Gildas then to La Prée, before returning by a grassy path then through the streets of Préfailles. The Loire estuary at Saint-Nazaire

Follow the Loire to the Atlantic with this hike for good walkers: 20 km round trip, the itinerary requires a little more than 6 hours. Between the seaside promenade in Saint-Nazaire and the coastal path, magnificent landscapes are offered to you. The departure is made in the district of the small Morocco, on the port, until the beaches of Saint-Marc-sur-Mer.

Pornic and the Tumulus of Mousseaux

Starting from the beach of Porteau in Pornic, this hike of approximately 2h30 proposes to you to traverse 8 km along the littoral then in the countryside in direction of the tumulus of Mousseaux. The return journey is along the golf course and the church of Sainte-Marie.

The port of Gravette in La Plaine-sur-Mer

Between country roads and seaside dotted with fisheries, this 12 km hike invites you to a 3.5 hour walk in a very pleasant setting. The departure and arrival are on the parking of the garden of Lakas. The loop leads along the coastline to the port of Gravette and on the way back passes by the Grotte de la Vierge.

Batz-le-Croisic by the Guerande marshes

A beautiful hike of a little more than 4 hours of walking for nearly 15 km. It makes a loop from Batz-sur-Mer and all around the peninsula of Le Croisic. A large part of the hike is done on the coastal path, another through the salt marshes of Guérande.

The banks of the Haute-Perche canal

Not far from the center of Pornic, the canal of Haute-Perche offers a framework of hedgerows and valleys ideal for hiking. A loop of 8 km, which can be done in about 2h30, is proposed for walkers of all levels and families. It alternates between the two banks of the canal with two crossings.

The marshes of Brière

Second largest freshwater marsh in France, the Briere is a natural area protected for its biodiversity. A part of this humid environment can be discovered during a hike between Sandun and Saint-André-les-Eaux, in summer only. The 13 km loop will require between 3 and 4 hours of walking.

The Breton marsh from Moutiers-en-Retz

Facing the bay of Bourgneuf and in the preserved environment of the Breton marsh, this loop of less than 13 km promises you 3h30 of walk in sumptuous landscapes. The departure is made at the level of the point of the Collet. Birdwatching shelters dot the route. Don’t forget the binoculars!

The Saint-Gildas point, big loop

Good walkers and hikers can undertake this loop around Saint-Gildas Point, which is a little longer than the first one: count on a little more than 3.5 hours of walking for about 12 km, which starts from the Préfailles beach and goes up to the port of La Gravette before going along the coastline to the Saint-Gildas semaphore.

The bay of Mesquer and the salt marshes

This small family hike offers a 6 km loop, for a walk of 1h30 to 1h45. The walk leads you through the salt marshes and along the coastline facing the bay of Mesquer. Beautiful beaches punctuate the route, as well as an orientation table facing the ocean.
